The territory of the Federal District is located in the geological province of lakes and volcanoes of Anahuac. The Federal District's northern boundary is given by the Sierra de Guadalupe is part of the hill of Tepeyac. To the east of Mexico City center is located the Sierra de Santa Catarina, a chain of extinct volcanoes whose highest point is the volcano of Guadalupe or The Borrego, which stands at 2780 meters. In some descriptions of the geography of the capital is usually included the Cerro de la Estrella as part of the Sierra de Santa Catarina.
The flatness of the valley of Mexico, which settles most of the inhabitants of Mexico City is only broken by small hills and mountains, of which highlight the rock of the Baths, located near the International Airport of Mexico City . Farther south, exit at Puebla, stands the old rock.

In the west of the town rises the hill of Chapultepec.
