The state is located in eastern Mexico and Tamaulipas bordered on the north, south to Oaxaca and Chiapas on the east by the Gulf of Mexico, west to San Luis Potosi, Hidalgo, Puebla and Tabasco to the southeast.

Its territory is crossed by numerous rivers, among them: in the north, the Panuco, Tuxpan, the Cazones, the Tecolutla and Nautla, in the center of the Actopan, the former and Jamapa and in the south, Papaloapan and Coatzacoalcos.
